Bethlehem Baptist Church

Bethlehem Baptist Church

Narrative Description

The District, through the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, has funded pre-development work on a 5-acre property that has been identified as a potential site for Barry Farm replacement housing. The site is owned by Bethlehem Baptist Church and is located at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, Howard and Sheridan Roads, SE, adjacent to Anacostia Metro Station. This strategic location presents an opportunity for a transit-oriented, mixed-use, and mixed-income development. Additionally, because the site is substantially vacant with no perceived environmental encumbrances, the site is primed for redevelopment. While still in a conceptual stage, the tentative development vision for the site aligns with the goals of the New Communities Initiative in that it presents an opportunity for mixed-income housing, retail/commercial features, and community-serving facilities and amenities.
